Day 12 — AI for Research and Knowledge Work

Purpose: Use AI to frame questions, organize evidence, surface uncertainty and produce traceable work.

Source/build status: New gap.

Learning outcomes

  • Turn a broad research request into a bounded question with a time frame.
  • Distinguish source-supported facts, inference and unresolved uncertainty.
  • Preserve traceability from important claims back to evidence.
  • Handle conflicting or stale sources without hiding the disagreement.

Core lesson — AI for Research and Knowledge Work

AI can accelerate question framing, search planning, comparison, synthesis and drafting, but research quality depends on evidence. Define the question and time frame, locate appropriate sources, separate source-supported facts from inference, preserve citations, reconcile conflicts rather than hiding them, and state what remains unknown. Time-sensitive claims require current evidence.

Worked example

Research whether a changing software feature is available on a particular plan. Record the exact question and date, prefer current first-party documentation for the product claim, capture the supporting passage, note conflicting or stale material, and write the conclusion only as strongly as the evidence permits.

Teaching / video direction

Show a research ledger with Question / Source / Date / Supported claim / Uncertainty. Demonstrate how a polished unsupported answer becomes a traceable one. Close by asking how evidence discipline translates into everyday business workflows—Day 13.

Hands-on practical exercise

  1. Choose a low-risk research question whose answer could change over time.
  2. Define the exact question, scope and as-of date.
  3. Collect a small set of appropriate sources and record source/date for each.
  4. Build a claim ledger: supported fact, inference, conflict or unknown.
  5. Draft a short answer with traceable support for important factual claims.
  6. Review the draft and weaken or remove any claim stronger than its evidence.

Knowledge check

  1. Why should a research question include scope and time frame?
  2. What is the difference between a sourced fact and an inference?
  3. How should conflicting evidence be represented?
  4. Why are current sources important for changing claims?
  5. What makes research traceable?
  6. When is 'unknown' a better answer than a plausible completion?

Assessment and remediation contract

The scored daily quiz uses 10 questions; 7/10 (70%) is a pass. Missed concepts map to exact lesson anchors for targeted remediation, including on a passing attempt. Attempts 1–9 below threshold return to remediation and a fresh eligible question set; an unsuccessful tenth attempt restarts the day in a new learning cycle while preserving history. The 50-question validated bank is a learner-release gate and will be scaled only after the Day 1 runtime passes acceptance.

Teaching / video script — 6–8 minute target

Open: Start with the worked scenario, not a generic definition: Research whether a changing software feature is available on a specific plan.

Teach: Demonstrate the method visibly: Define the question and date, find authoritative current sources, distinguish evidence from inference, record citations, and state unresolved uncertainty. Pause at the judgment point and explain why the system should not simply continue on autopilot: AI can accelerate synthesis but should not silently replace source verification for time-sensitive or consequential claims.

Practice bridge: Ask the learner to reproduce the method on a different low-risk example, mark the verification/control step, and explain the reason for it.

Close: Day 13: apply the same discipline to business productivity workflows.

Production / QA notes

  • Use the worked scenario as the primary visual sequence; avoid generic AI-brain imagery.
  • Keep terminology vendor-neutral and define unavoidable technical terms in context.
  • Do not equate fluent output with verified truth or AI assistance with autonomous authority.
  • Before learner release, fact-check the final lesson and validate every scored item against explicit teaching.
Review key learning points

Define the question and time frame, locate appropriate sources, separate source-supported facts from inference, preserve citations, reconcile conflicts rather than hiding them, and state what remains unknown.

Time-sensitive claims require current evidence.

Record the exact question and date, prefer current first-party documentation for the product claim, capture the supporting passage, note conflicting or stale material, and write the conclusion only as strongly as the evidence permits.

Assessment

There are 10 questions. Submit at least 7 answers; 7 correct answers pass. Unanswered questions score zero. Every missed answer links to its exact learning passage.
